Black holes do emit (Hawking radiation); but it is not light. Hawking radiation has never actually been detected. It's too faint to be detected by current tools. At the moment the only way to see a black hole is by it's gravitational effect on other objects. I agree. And black holes can be detected...

Thanks. BTW I just want to say that I had also got into Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Cornell. Finally I chose Harvard. It was a tough choice (all the really excellent); however, I feel that I made the best decision. :) Congratulations once again for being able to get into those other universities ...
