BdMO National 2021 Primary Problem 1

Once upon a time, in a far-away village, there were $42$ villagers. Each of them either always told the truth or always lied. Being fascinated, a stranger once asked each of them, "How many of you are liars?" None of them gave a direct answer. But $26$ out of them replied that the number of liars is odd and other $16$ told that it was even. How many of them were lying?

26 liars.
They said the number of liars are odd
But there are 42-26=16
It's even.
