All About Decimals

Unread post by Jalal » Fri May 28, 2021 6:21 pm

1. What is the difference among ‘decimal number’, ‘decimal numeral’, ‘decimal fraction’, ‘decimal number system’ and ‘decimal numeral system’?

2. Is decimal a type of number? Is there any difference between ‘decimals’ and ‘decimal numbers’? What types of rational numbers include the numbers like $4.9$ and $3.\overline{56}$? And what types of irrational numbers include the numbers like $\pi$ and $2.71803...$? Can we represent an irrational number as decimal number or decimal fraction?

3. Is integer a type of decimal number or decimal numeral or decimal number system or decimal numeral system? For example, $12$ is an integer, but is it a decimal number?

By decimal, we actually mean 2 things. The number system and the decimal or I should say numbers in general.
The decimal number system is our number system, with 10 symbols. Note Deci means 10.

By decimal number, "In algebra, a decimal number can be defined as a number whose whole number part and the fractional part is separated by a decimal point." The first page of Google, couldn't argue with that. I guess integers can be called decimals but unconventional and weird.
The Mathematician does not study math because it is useful; he studies it because he delights in it, and he delights in it because it is beautiful.
